Submitted By: Nancy Richards

Caring for parakeets is the most important step in keeping parakeets as pets. Remember their immune systems can be touchy. This means that at the first sign of illness, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. Even a simple virus can turn deadly overnight. A regular care and checkup of your parakeet can keep you away from visiting the vet too frequently. Caring for parakeets means:

A regular checkup of their plumage - birds keep their plumage in peak condition by preening. You can encourage this by occasionally misting it with warm water.
Selecting the right cage for your parakeet - choose a cage that is large enough to allow it plenty of exercise. Most cages come with 2 perches. For more specialized caring for parakeets, you can attach a cuttlebone to the side of the cage. It will help keep the bird’s beak in good condition and will serve as a source of calcium and other minerals.
A proper and adequate diet – this is the single most notable aspect in shaping the health, vitality, and permanence of your parakeet. Give them leafy green vegetables, rice, tofu, some seeds and fruits like orange and papaya. These would give them all the required nutrients to keep them healthy.
Regular bathing of your parakeet – give your parakeet a regular shower of 5-7 times a week in the summer and 3-5 times a week during the winter. This routine will help you keep your parakeet clean and avoid skin related diseases.
Proper grooming of your parakeet – proper and regular trimming of the toenails is very essential. Consult a veterinarian if you wish to clip its wings.

Lack of parakeet care can result in feather plucking, moody and ill-trained parakeets at home. It is always a good idea to know what injuries and what diseases can affect your parakeet, what is the ideal diet for a parakeet, how many times a week should you give it a bath. These would help you undertake foolproof caring for your pet parakeets.

A healthy parakeet is more likely to be immune to diseases and can stay around for a long time to make you laugh, make you entertained and give you a moment to smile…

Beautiful location. Decent size shop, carrying a variety of pet supplies concentrating on Cat and Dog supples, but they also have a little bit of everything else.

Some live stock available also: a white rabbit and a couple of Labrador Retrievers were the main event, with a Cocker Spaniel napping across from the counter. Opposite of the counter a Sulcata tortoise was on display. A few parakeets and a small selection of freshwater fish and plants could be found toward the back of the shop.

Like the look of the shop, but I can’t shake the feeling that something is missing when I leave it.

Pet Shop Located across the Cinema at the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center. Good size, a little empty, but nice assortment of supplies. First shop that actually had live rocks for sale. (If your thinking about nabbing these, be sure you can control the temperature in you aquarium. A cooler than room temperature is important.).

No dogs or cats here, but bunnies, guinea pig, and mice could be found here. As well as a nice selection of Jackson Chameleons, with a variety of lovebirds, cockatiels, parakeets, and finches displayed toward the back. Along the side of the shop were aquariums stocked with Freshwater and Saltwater fish.

Also, one of the few shops that had Crown Betta fish available (Yes, I’m still in to that. Even more so as the betta I bought at Pets Plus is content in sticking its head in its marble stones all day like an cartoon ostrich- and no its not dead.). I have to say, even though small, they had the best selection of betta’s I’ve seen thus far. (Although the water they’re contained in could be changed)

Its more open now, which gives the shop a bigger feel. Still carries a good assortment of accessories and I have to say, just when I thought I couldn’t find any more exotic pets, I find ducklings! Good price too, don’t think I can have one though.

Shops also carries a nice variety of freshwater fish (some nice discus fish available), a few saltwater fish, a red-ear slider turtle, Jackson Chameleons, and a few birds. Of which they had pure white and pure yellow parakeets, finches, lovebirds, and canaries.

I’m still in my Betta Fish phase for the office, so I ended up picking up a red crown at a very low price.

Passed through Ward Centre today and made a quick stop to see what was in stock. Today in the small animal showcase they had a few green-yellow parakeets, a couple of gray cockatiels, and a love bird playing on one side. A guinea pig and a couple of bunnies resting up on the other side of the display.

Again the main feature were the puppies in the window. A Jack Russell, a few Mixed Chihuahua’s, an AKC long-haired Chihuahua, and a Basenji. The Basenji was eager for attention, begging from all on lookers to take him home. The Ward Pet Spot is one of the few shops that generally has a good assortment of puppies, always worth taking a look at if your in the market for a puppy.

Does that saying still work if your in Ewa? or does it become Waianae side of McDonalds? Ok…

Large Shop located across McDonalds in the Ewa Beach Shopping Center. Carries a variety of everything. Only shop I’ve seen that had cats available, not counting the white cat in this picture which worked hard next to the aquariums making sure there were no live fish on the floor. I was told there was another black cat working but never saw the cat when I visited.

Other live stock available here: saltwater fish, freshwater fish, Bunnies, Parakeets, Conures, Lovebirds, a Cockatoo, Jackson Chameleons, and puppies. Today they had AKC Whippet puppies, a Chihuahua Fox Terrier mix, and Australian Cattle puppies. The Whippets and Cattle puppies were a little more than a couple of months old and were already quite large in size, so make sure you have enough space inside and out of your house if your thinking of picking up these breeds.

Back to the Parakeets, its worth mentioning this is the first shop that I’ve seen pure white Parakeets. (Just in case someone was looking for something out of the ordinary)

Beautiful shop, well worth the drive.

Pearl Highlands Center (455-8500)
Business Hours: Mon-Sat from 10-8pm and Sunday from 10-6pm.
Small shop located on the west corner of Pearl Highlands Center, close to the Puma Store. Decent variety of accessories. Although at the time I visited they were selling off their showcase aquarium displays and of those only two aquariums contained feeder fish, a small selection of Dojo’s, Electric Yellows, a medium Blue cichlid, and just a few others fish for sale. I’ll take it that they are giving up on selling fish at this location and will concentrate on their puppy display and small split section display of birds and small critters. I must add that they still sell fish accessories and small to medium consumer aquariums.

Puppy breeds available included Basenji’s which they tout as a barkless dog and a few mixed fox terrier/chihuahua’s. The Basenji intrigued me, I’ll have to research this breed next and add it to my Petpedia I’m creating for this blog. Also available were a few lovebirds, parakeets, and guinea pigs. Of the guinea pigs, they had a couple of pure white guinea pigs with the eerie red eyes, which to me resembled the look of oversized mice.

Overall a nice small shop. It would of been nice to have seen fish on display, but I guess the size of the shop doesn’t validate having them.

Nice looking shop located in the west section of Ward Centre, inside Ward Warehouse. Carries a variety of pet accessories and some of the cutest small animals I’ve seen in a while. This store didn’t have much live stock, but what they had you want to buy. At the time I visited they had some very colorful guinea pigs, a few bunnies, and parakeets. But the main attractions had to be the puppies, a Pomeranian, a Chihuahua, a mixed Terrior/Dachshund, several mixed Chihuahua/Dachshund (These were adorable), and a Jack Russell (I believe).

One of the few shops that does not have live fish for sale, although they do carry accessories for them. Overall a good looking spacious shop, that will have me visiting every time I happen to stroll through Ward.
