Posted under Petpedia by oahupet

Scientific name: Balantiocheilos melanopterus
Temperature: 72 – 82°F
pH: 6.0-8.0
Diet: Omnivore
Temperment: Relatively peaceful, can be aggressive if confined to a smaller aquarium. Best kept in schools of 3 to 5 fishes.

The Bala shark are hardy fish and are one of the easiest fish to maintain, but quickly grow to a size too large for most home aquariums. Aquariums should be large (recommended 6 feet in length) with live plants and have lots of swimming areas.

Bala sharks are very active fish and will cover all areas of the tank, they are also skilled jumpers so a tight fitting cover is required. It has no specific feeding requirements, will accept all flake food as well as supplemental live food, and may eat smaller live stock in the aquarium.

A must note: In 1996, this species was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species by the The World Conservation Union.
